The full name of the renowned Jamaican musician, great guitarist and songwriter, Bob Marley, was Robert Nesta Marley Booker.
He was born on February 6, 1945 and died on May 11, 1981 in the city of Miami, United States of America, that is to say at the age of 36, certainly very young. He married Rita at the age of 21 and had three children: Ziggy, Damian and Ky-Mani.

- Bob Marley’s ancestry was part black and part white, this caused him during his childhood and adolescence to be mocked for being mulatto. His father died when Bob was very young, he was just ten years old. Over time, he knew how to overcome that discrimination that came from even his own brothers, but time made him overcome it and continue with his life without rancor. But in reality, in his heart he only valued the black part that he had and that’s how he felt. He lived in a small town called Nine Miles very close to Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, the town owed its name to the fact that it was nine miles from the capital of Kingston. Her mother Cedella worked hard to support her family who lived in poverty, without water or electricity. In this small town where he was born, he met who would become his great friend, Bunny Wailer. Bob Marley’s family moved to Kingston with the idea of improving economically, of finding a new life that would get them out of poverty. There, Bob along with Bunny began to venture into music, composing and playing songs. Already in 1962 he participated in an audition with an important producer with whom he began to record his first songs and from there the musician made a great career with great worldwide success. At the age of 22, in July 1977, the doctors discovered that an acrallentiginous melanoma had formed on the toe of his right foot, this cancerous lesion found commonly appears on the big toe. Bob Marley did not want to undergo the necessary treatment or have his toe amputated to fight cancer. He never believed that he had this disease until the very end, when he had already gotten so bad that there was nothing to do.
He never really thought that he had cancer since it started as a small wound on his toe, so much so that he continued doing his normal activities such as rehearsing for his tour, playing soccer, without paying attention to what the doctors advised: treat cancer and amputate the finger. He subtly took it and said that he couldn’t imagine standing up and missing a toe at his foot. In times when the pain was very intense, he would let his foot rest for a few days and then resume it with the same intensity as always. They say that a Rastafarian brother, a healer, who relieved people’s pain, assured him that his was not cancer. This confirmed what he believed and assured all the people around him.
When his illness was announced to him, he ignored this situation and continued actively preparing a world tour that would begin in 1980. But the death of the vocalist of the group they made up, Jacob Miller, died in an accident in Jamaica, so the tour scheduled was abandoned.
But he kept working and in May 1980 the album “Uprising” was released, in his song “Redemption Song” he gave the impression of beginning to accept death.
Bob Marley’s band made an important tour of Europe, at one of the concerts, in Milan, one hundred thousand spectators attended. He then traveled to the United States where he gave two concerts at Madison Square Garden.
Soon after, his health began to worsen as the cancer had spread throughout his body. Faced with this situation, she decided to undergo treatment in Germany based on diets, drinks and other substances. He spent eight months there without finding any improvement, so he returned to Jamaica.
When he was returning to Jamaica, on the plane he began to feel worse and his vital functions began to fail. For this reason he was transferred immediately after landing to the hospital. He died at what is now Miami University Hospital, at the time called Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. It was May 11, 1981, when he was 36 years old.
His last words were dedicated to his son Ziggy Marley: “Money can’t buy life.”
His funeral, 10 days after his death, mixed elements of the Orthodox Church and the Rastafarian tradition with which he was identified. They buried him next to his guitar in a place close to his birthplace.
His funeral was very well attended, the Prime Minister of Jamaica spoke a few words to remember the legendary musician, referring to the fact that Bob Marley was much more than a musician, that his passing left an indelible mark on everyone’s minds.
