How To Make Macrame Bracelets

Macramé is a technique of French origin that means making knots, it is worked only with the hands making different types of knots, such as the flat knot and the flat and the cote knot (the most common). Although the technique is old, it is still used today and with the large number of knots that were created plus the colorful threads on the market, the number of products made in macramé was greatly expanded.

Points such as: chevron, cob, diagonal, zigzag, simple, double, braid, flat are some of the points that are currently practiced most frequently and you see them especially in bracelets.

This type of craft has become very fashionable because with just a little practice and inexpensive materials, bracelets can be made, among other things, very colorful, striking and cheap.

What do you need to make macrame bracelets?

  • Strong and colorful threads: embroidery, waxed, mouse tail, silk, etc.
  • A work table and a hook to hold or tape
  • Scissors, measuring tape.

Instructions for making macrame bracelets

  1. Flat knot: cut 2 strands of thread of the same or different color. Tie a knot leaving an eyelet at the end. Fix the two in the center and the buttonhole part with tape. Start by tying a knot around the two in the center from the right side (look at the photo so you can see how the threads cross).
  2. Pull and tighten the knot. Repeat the operation starting once from the right and again from the left.
  3. When you have reached the desired length of the bracelet tie another knot and cut the excess so that the knot passes through the eyelet and fits. The center threads should be shorter than the outer ones.
  4. Twist knot: A variation of the flat knot is the twist knot that is simply done starting always from the right or always from the left.
  5. Horizontal festoon: To make this knot that you can give the width you want, you can do it by holding the threads with a skewer stick and fix it to the table so that it does not move.  Fold the thread in half, pass it in front of the stick and insert the other (double) end through the remaining eyelet and tighten.  Place two or three more threads in the same way depending on the width you want to give the bracelet. In the model you will see that there are 3 threads resulting in 6 laces. Take another thread, it can be of the same color so that it is not seen or of a different color, although it will practically be hidden. Secure it horizontally and double knot each of the six hanging from the stick. Start from the left and tie a front knot over the horizontal string with the first string and then the back string; now take the second bead and repeat the operation. Do the same until you finish the row.  Then repeat the entire row from right to left. Continue like this until you give your bracelet the desired length. Tie off the end and pull out the top end of the skewer stick and thread thread through the remaining eyelets and fasten. To close it, you can also leave the threads at the end longer and pass them all together through the upper buttonholes, then adjust to your size.
  6. Diagonal festoon: The previous bracelet can be combined with the festoon but inclined knot. For this, all you have to do is make some horizontal festoons and with the same system you fix the auxiliary thread at an angle. When you tie the knots, you must leave the cord loose so that the distance varies and it is inclined. You can create your own design with horizontal, sloped festoons and by adding accessories.
