Here we will teach you how to write was or was, the correct form and we will make you practice with some exercises to fix the correct form.
The correct word is was, the other is not only incorrect but also has no meaning, because sometimes it is common to confuse the way of writing two words that differ by only one letter while their meaning is different. For example, if we compare the words go and fence that go is a verb (It would be good for me to go to that meeting) and fence is a noun (the fence separated the spectators from those who marched). We can also compare go with berry, both exist but we must differentiate them. We have already exemplified go (verb) and baya (noun). To give you an example with a berry we can say: the squirrel found a berry and took her to his cave.

Instructions to write was or was
- The word was is a conjugated verb corresponding to the third person singular: for example we say: Dinner was very tasty, that is, we refer to the near past, something that happened in the short term. Another example: the thief was about to break out of jail.
- The rule on the use of the “v” says: The simple past tense of the indicative mood, the imperfect past tense and imperfect future of the subjunctive mood of the verbs to be, to walk and to have are written with “v”.
- In this case, the verb that interests us is the verb TO BE. How is it conjugated?
- Simple past tense of the Indicative mood:
- I was _
- You were seen
- He was
- We were _
- You were _
- They were _
- As you will see, the word was does not exist, it has no meaning and cannot replace was.
- Another confusion that can occur is that, coming from the same verb TO BE, the imperfect tense of the indicative mood does use the “b”, for example was, this can make you doubt about the use of v.
- Past Perfect of the verb TO BE in the indicative mood:
- I ‘m fine
- you are so
- He is bad
- We are b loves
- You are going
- They were fine
- As you will see, all the endings of this conjugation go with “b”, the ending aba…which also indicates a past but more distant.
- For example: I remember when we were in Barcelona, it talks about a more imprecise past, that’s why it’s imperfect.
- On the other hand, if we say: We were in Barcelona, we are referring to a specific event, we are assuring that it was so.
- To affirm this knowledge, this new learning and that you do not make mistakes when writing, we will provide you with some exercises. Focus on the simple past tense (immediate past) and the imperfect past (imprecise past), both in the indicative mood. Always using the verb TO BE:
- Read each sentence carefully and write down the misspelled words on a piece of paper, helping you with the two conjugations written in this article:
- The bees were making honey while the queen was watching them carefully.
- I brought flowers to the Virgin that I bought on the way while you were cutting from the garden to give to your girlfriends.
- As we were sitting in the theater I remembered that I was there a year ago.
- Every morning that he was with me, breakfast was a great moment of dialogue and laughter.
- If you were next to her, surely you realized that she was not there.
- Daniela and Joaquín were about to get married while he loved another woman who did not hesitate to get in the way of their relationship. That’s why when they were arriving at the Church he got in their way forever ruining the happiness that Daniela dreamed of for herself.
- If you were in that place that day in May, surely you know that he was there before me.
- Make a list on a piece of paper with each of the highlighted words (12) and write the correct form next to it if it is wrong. Try to memorize the correct form and avoid looking at the written conjugations if possible unless absolutely necessary.
