It is common that we find in the texts that we read both the word “immediately” together and ” immediately “ separately, which usually creates great confusion for us, and leads us to ask ourselves questions such as: Could it be that they mean something different? Which one will be correct? How should I write it? That is why we give you an explanation of how to write: right away or right away to clear up these doubts and so that you feel calm when writing this word or these words.
When we write the word right away, like this together, we are talking about an adverb of time, which indicates an action that occurs quickly afterwards, that is, it indicates carrying out an action in a short period of time, it is like a cause and effect.
Examples: the waiter took the order and replied: “I’ll bring your food right away.” I lay down and immediately fell asleep. Immediately, separate writing is also an adverb, an adverbial locution that indicates the location of a place.
Examples: I live right next to the bakery. The next door neighbor makes a lot of noise at night. Next is your house.

Instructions to write immediately or right away
- When we write right away, together, it is an adverb of time that tells us that an immediate action would occur as a consequence of something. Example: they called me to take some medicines to my grandfather, I immediately hung up and went to take them.
- When you write it separately, that is, right away ,it does not have a different meaning, just like the previous one, it is also an adverb of time which indicates immediacy. Example: the doorbell rang and I immediately went to open it.
- The two words have the same meaning and it will be correct to express yourself as you prefer, you can write it in both ways.
- If you go to the RAE (Royal Spanish Academy) and put the word in the search box, the following will appear immediately: “immediately Tb. right away. adv. Immediately afterwards in time or space.”
- To take into account: it is good to know that the latest trends and the different educational institutions have recommended that we use this adverb by writing it in a single word “immediately”, each time this adverb made up of two words “immediately” is more in disuse and tends to to its disappearance, thus leaving only the word right away. It is also advisable to write it as a single word in the Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of Doubts, being valid to write it separately. Although investigations have revealed that in the texts the separated word is found more immediately, since in 2001 it was the one preferred by the RAE.
- In this case, writing in both ways means the same thing, but they are special cases, so we cannot think, for example, that writing about everything and about everything will be the same.
- We can say that, although they mean the same thing, the difference is that immediately is an adverbial locution since it is made up of two words and immediately is an adverb as such.
