A poem is a written text that has several verses and most of them rhyme with each other. Writing a poem is interesting as it shows that you are a cultivated and intelligent person.
Before it was very common to write a poem to your partner or even to your family, a detail that unfortunately has been lost because the world is moving faster and romanticism has been lost.
In addition to the love theme, writing a poem can help you improve your grade in Spanish or even earn money by creating a blog of poems that allows you to earn money by monetizing it with ads.
Even by writing a poem you can later get a job as a singer or songwriter, since if you look closely most of the songs rhyme with each other, something that undoubtedly helps when it comes to attracting an audience to your music.
Oddly enough, it’s really not as complicated to learn to write a poem as it may seem, you just have to respect a few small rules and try a little.
From the doncomos.com section we are going to teach you step by step how to write a poem, so that you can surprise that person you love so much and that, incidentally, you can pass the Spanish language or be a singer, so pay attention.

Instructions for writing poetry
- Basic things: The first thing you need to know is a couple of basic things to write a poem. First of all, the simplest poems are usually separated into groups of 4 verses, with different rhymes from each other (which I will explain later what they consist of). Then you obviously have to make a theme for the poem, that is, that the verses have to deal with the same thing and that they be similar. Good poems have symmetrical lines, that is, rhyming lines usually have the same number of syllables within them, thus achieving perfect symmetry. Then obviously you must write without spelling mistakes and know the rhymes, which we are going to talk about now.
- Types of rhymes: A poem must rhyme, otherwise it is not a poem but a simple story. Most people only know about couplet rhymes, however there are quite a few more. The rhyming couplet means that the following verse rhymes with the previous one, for example “I’m starting to feel hot”, “for having eaten valuable chocolates”. Then you have rhyming verses ABAB where the letters A rhyme with each other and the letters B rhyme with each other. You can also put ABBA rhymes where the same letters always rhyme or even a group of 3 verses with ABA or AAB, passing the B to rhyme in the next group of verses. You should also know that there are two types of rhymes, consonant rhyme and assonant rhyme, consonant rhyme is that both vowels and consonants rhyme in a verse, for example “clara” with “lara”. The assonance rhyme is that only the vowels rhyme, for example “clara” with “piara” where the letters A rhyme.
- Getting everything to rhyme: The difficult thing is to find words that rhyme with each other, for this, we are going to go to a rhyming dictionary in Google, in which we can look for what rhymes with each word by putting the word in question in the dictionary, which will tell us everything that rhymes with that word. Once you’re an expert poet, you won’t need this tool, but it’s really good to start with.
- Inspiration and symmetry: Now comes the hard part, that is, getting inspiration to write and make all the rhyming lines of the same length. For this you have to be patient and try to make the rhymes and the length at least similar. Do not demand too much of yourself at first and try to make everything add up, but yes, give it enough time so that everything turns out well and is a poetry worth reading.
Tips for writing poetry
- Reading poems: If you read poems by other Spanish authors you will be able to learn a little about this, since they are the best examples I know of it. You will see how they use the structures, how the syllables are similar, how everything makes sense and how everything rhymes as it should rhyme. Of course, avoid plagiarism since everyone will realize that this poem is not yours, simply take it as a reference to be able to start composing in the correct way and to be a great poet in the long term. Be patient, work hard and the results will come with time.
