If you are a music lover and in addition to listening to songs and seeing what the lyrics say, if they are in another language, you would like to write them, here are some keys on how to write songs.
Instructions for writing songs
- Think about what you would like to compose. There are very varied themes, although perhaps the best known is that of love or romance, but you can choose the one that most attracts your attention and above all, the one with which you are going to put the greatest feeling, since the lyrics of the songs are based on composer’s sentiments.
- Get inspired. Once you know the theme, you will have to create a story about which the lyrics will be based. You can think of something that has happened to you, someone close to you, or you can imagine it. If it is plausible, it may be easier for you because you already know how it starts and ends, although you can always modify that original version.
- Think about the melody. Work on the rhythm, tempo, and melody of your song. How do you want it to be and what instruments will appear.
- Make a good structure. Think that at the beginning there should be an introduction, in the same way as in a letter or a book, which can be only instrumental or with lyrics. Then there should be two paragraphs in which, in the first you must start the story and in the second continue it. Then there will be the chorus, which is what is repeated the most and the most important and, as a general rule, what has the most rhythm. And also your song must have a transition that is a part of the lyrics before starting the chorus. This can always be the same or it can change.
- Fit the lyrics into the melody you have thought of. How long do you want there to be music without lyrics and at what time do you want the lyrics to come in along with the melody.
- Write down on a sheet the ideas that you want to appear in your song so that you don’t forget anything.
- Note the time. The average duration of the songs is 3-4 minutes, otherwise it will be very long, and more if you are starting to compose.
- To improve you must listen to music, this is how good songs are created. Look at the structures and you can be inspired by your favorite song.
- Think that your lyrics must say something, in the same way that in stories and fables there is a moral, words must come out of songs that reach whoever listens to them.
- Once you have the lyrics and the melody written, it’s time to get down to work. Learn the chords you’ve written and fit the rhythm of the lyrics into them.
- When you think you have everything ready, review it and above all, record yourself to see how it sounds from the outside. So you get an idea of what others are listening to and if you want to change something.
- When you consider that you have it ready, you can take a camera and record yourself to upload it to the networks and YouTube, or if you go further and think you have a lot of talent, go to a production company.
Tips for writing songs
- Always carry something to aim at. Inspiration can come to you at any time and it is important that you write down the ideas before you forget them. It is not going to be that you have had a great idea but no place to aim, and then you no longer remember.
- Listen to the song you are creating over and over again, even take time for your ears to rest from listening to the same thing all the time. Give yourself a couple of days and then come back with your song.
- Be very patient. Some days the inspiration will come to you and others not. Some days you will love the tune and another you may hate it. So be very patient because it is a long process and you should not be overwhelmed, otherwise it will be worse because you can get frustrated.
- If you want to go one level further and make your song more successful, you can create a dance, a video clip. Even if you do it at home because you don’t have the necessary means, try to run away from the seedy, in that case leave it.
- Even if you have written a song and it has taken you a long time, if there is something that does not convince you or you think it is not good, do not publish it anywhere because it can dirty your future compositions. Keep it for yourself, and so you will see where you could have failed and take it as an example to improve on future occasions.
- Find a quiet place, or not, to help you get inspired. This can arrive at any time, although you can also search for it. Put on music that you like or be silent and think about what you want to tell and to whom, or think about something that has happened to you and transfer those thoughts to paper and turn it into the lyrics of your song.
