To write correctly it is necessary to know the basic spelling rules. Even knowing them, doubts may arise when writing, and if we pay attention to the accentuation of the words, these uncertainties may become greater. A help to correctly stress is to separate the words into syllables, but it is not always easy to do so. Sometimes we find vowels together that can make us confuse when separating into syllables. For this it is necessary that you know what is the difference between diphthong, triptongo and hiatus, because they are going to determine the way in which these syllables are separated by means of the combination of the different vowels. Knowing this difference will help you to accentuate and separate the words correctly, therefore, to write correctly.

Instructions
- DIPTHONGO: is formed when two vowels are combined together in the same syllable. But they are not just any two vowels, it must be a combination of an open vowel with a closed vowel, or a closed vowel with an open vowel or two closed vowels. For this, it is necessary to distinguish which are the open mouths and which are the closed ones. Open vowels: they are also called strong vowels, they are a, e and Closed vowels: also called weak vowels, they are i and u.
- Thus, here we present the three diphthong possibilities with some examples: Decreasing Diphthong: Open vowel (a,e,o) + closed vowel (i,u) = ai – re; p au – sa; pei – ne ; Eu – ro; oi – ga; S ou -za. Crescent Diphthong: Closed vowel (i,u) + open vowel (a,e,o) = mag ia ; nie – ve ; vio – le -ta; glove ; _ _ wow _-not; an-ti- g Homogeneous Diphthong: Closed Vowel(i,u) + Closed Vowel(i,u) = c iu -dad; d iu -re-ti-co; c ui -give; rui – na
- It is important to note that in the case of a closed vowel plus an open vowel, or vice versa, the open vowel must be tonic. And in the case of the two closed vowels, both must be different. It should be added that the letter h inserted between the vowels of the diphthong does not alter it, as is the case with the following words: ahu-mar; there -ha-do.
- The general rules of accentuation are obviously taken into account in the diphthongs, placing the tilde in the grave acute words and esdrújulas that require it. In the case of a diphthong formed by an open vowel and a closed vowel (or vice versa), the tilde is placed over the open vowel, such as: clausal; nautical ; _ too ; _ ad io In the case of a diphthong with two closed vowels, the tilde is placed over the second vowel, for example: lingüí stico, c uí
- Practice with a partner doing a dictation of these words.
- TRIPTONGO: is the combination of three vowels that come together in one syllable. They are formed by an open vowel that is in the middle of two closed vowels, the open vowel being tonic. The structure would look like this: Triphthong: closed vowel (i,u) + open vowel (a,e,o) + closed vowel (i,u) = des-pre- c iéi s ; meow ; _ wow ; _ prizes ; _ _ _ o- p ioi -de ; a-ve-ri – güéi s ; a-mor-ti- g uái s
- Practice the diphthongs and triphthongs on paper, in order to better differentiate them.
- Words with a triphthong will carry an accent mark when the general rules of accentuation so require, and it will always be placed over the open vowel, as is the case with: despreciéis, estudiais, amortiguáis, asociáis, atestigüéis, expiéis.
- HIATO: occurs when two vowels are found together, but since they do not form a diphthong, they are found in separate and consecutive syllables. For example t e– a -tro ; c a – e n ; b a – ú
- There are three kinds of hiatus, they are: a) Open vowel followed by a different open vowel: a– ho -go; t e – a tro ; hero – e ; _ _ c a – e b) Open vowel followed by stressed closed vowel and stressed closed vowel followed by open vowel: r e – ú -ne ; v e – hí -cu-lo ; p a – í s ; a – u –lan. c) Combination of two equal vowels: ch i – i -ta ; Sa – a – ve – dra ; d e – he – sa
- In the second case, that is, an open vowel followed by a stressed closed vowel (and vice versa), the tilde is always placed on the second vowel(whether it is open or closed). For example: Raúl, incredible, María, trusty, day, duo, empty, trunk, coffin, tram, fall, fry, palindrome. In the other two cases, an open vowel followed by an open vowel and a combination of two equal vowels, the tildes are placed (or not) following the general rules of accentuation.
- If you are a student, pay attention in class and clear all doubts with your teacher.
Tips
- To practice diphthongs, triphthongs and hiatuses, it is highly recommended to practice with dictations, for a person to dictate words to you and you write them down and separate them by syllables and then classify them into these three variables that we have seen.
- Create in you the habit of reading, so you will improve your writing and it will help you to correctly accentuate the words.
