Generation X, Y, Z – Everything You Need To Know

Nowadays, many people know what the generations are, but not the characteristics that these 7 generations currently have, which are the Lost Generation, the Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, X, Millennials (Y), Generation Z and the current generation that is alpha (T). (But since the first 2 aren’t crowded anymore and the last one is barely in development, we’ll rule them out for now.)

People can easily identify a person’s generation by their behavior or some features that are easy to notice. And believe it or not, you like these peculiarities.

But you should know a little more in depth about this concept and its differences. So, with nothing more to say, we begin to see that this topic is interesting.

Baby boomers

These are the people who were born in the years 1935 through 1960. You can also call it the Jones generation, but it’s only for the people who were born in 1957, which is when the first boomers fathered their children.

The word “Baby boomer” is a way to describe the people who came into the world during the baby boom. What is the demographic phenomenon between 1946 and 1964 after the Second World War. It also has the peculiarity that there was a very notable increase in the population. From there you can see why there were large families.

Now we will see the main characteristics of the Baby boomers

  • They like to read books, novels and/or written press.
  • They prefer to be at home than spend time on the street. Since almost all the people belonging to this generation are the ones with a large family, they decide to be with it.
  • When they go to watch television, they like to watch the news, politics, game shows, and documentaries.
  • They read the newspaper a lot. But with the advent of TV and color on these devices, they read the news from the newspaper and watch it on TV.
  • They do not buy impulsively, even though they live on a pension or savings. They do not like to buy themselves some luxuries. And when buying they are slow in making decisions.
  • When technology advanced with the advent of computers, some people of this generation decided to adapt to change. So the social network they use the most is Facebook.

Generation X

It is the generation that follows the Baby boomers, which are the people born between 1965 and 1980.

As a curious fact, sometimes this generation is called the “key generation”, due to the low supervision of their children by parents if we compare it with the previous ones.

Now let’s move on to its main features:

  • They are very concerned when it comes to thinking about their future, so they look for something other than college to have a good life. That is why MBAs are the most popular in this part.
  • They love to be successful and at the same time demonstrate it, doing it through accessories, trips, gadgets, etc.
  • Although they like technology, they are alien to the internet, social networks or commerce, so they resist using it.
  • When they are going to make purchase decisions a little faster and we compare it with its previous generation.

Generation y

Also called “millennium generation”, “millennium” or the one that is better known “millennial”.

Although there is no precise date when this generation begins, many demographers used the first years of the decade, and in this case it would be between the years 1980 and 1999, which is when this generation ends and goes on to the next one. it will be discussed later.

Let’s move on to its peculiarities:

  • They prefer to watch videos, since they can watch them at any time, so they never use it when watching TV or listening to the radio.
  • They love to learn based on tutorials on the internet.
  • As the internet was taking incredible steps, for this generation they loved it so much compared to the previous one, that’s why they like to communicate through videos, social networks, blogs.
  • They entertain themselves with video games both on console, computer and/or mobile.
  • They prefer to work from home or have their own company, since they do not like to follow strict office hours at all.
  • The media and the news do not attract their attention.
  • They don’t like to read. And neither in learning more about information that reaches them on social networks.
  • They prefer to buy products whose brands are transparent and honest. Basically, they trust more information on the internet than advertisements.

Generation Z

Also called postmillennial or centuric. It is the generation in which people are born since 2000 (there is still no exact year for the conclusion of this generation, and although the T generation came out, its dates are speculation).

This generation used technology and the internet from a young age, so today they feel too comfortable when using it.

Their characteristics are:

  • The internet is part of your life, becoming your daily routine. So they can be connected approximately 20 hours a week.
  • The social networks they use the most are: YouTube, Instagram and/or Snapchat.
  • They know perfectly well that they spend a lot of time connected to their devices.
  • Some of his favorite stars are: ElRubius, HolaSoyGerman, FernanFloo, PauTips, etc.
